When most individuals picture cardio, running is often the first image that comes to mind. However, there are so many different variations of cardio that exist outside of going for a run. This comes as great news to those who have never been able to condition their bodies to engage in this form of exercise or have never been able to enjoy it. The bottom line is that, while exercise is important, individuals should also be able to engage in it in a way that they enjoy. If running isn’t something you fancy, there are plenty of other activities that serve as cardio, many of which you can partake in this upcoming summer.

Water Activities

One of the best ways to improve your cardiovascular system and build endurance is by swimming. This activity engages every muscle group in your body. Not only does it work your core and arms, but it also helps improve your heart rate and endurance. Swimmer’s abs aren’t a myth – this muscle group is worked out immensely while swimming. Depending on your body size and swimming style, you could burn over 500 calories in one hour. Of course, leisurely wading in the water might not give you these same results. But intentionally embracing the swimming lanes at a local pool will give you a cardio workout that has visible effects after getting into the routine of doing so.

Aside from swimming, water-related activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and similar “sports” are also great summer workouts. They can burn up to 200 calories in just 30 minutes, depending on your intensity level. While most of these activities have some sort of physical benefit, stand-up paddleboarding can provide a great full-body workout due to its use of both the arms and back.

Hiking Trails

Getting outside is a great way to spend time with family and friends this summer. Hiking is a great way to spend time in the great outdoors as well as build strength and improve your cardiovascular health. Like walking or running, hiking uses your legs and glutes to get around the various challenging surfaces. It’s also a great way to raise your heart rate and improve endurance without having to take a run.

You can estimate the number of calories that you burn by taking into account various factors such as the terrain, your speed, and your weight.

This summer, prioritize your fitness while also making it into something that you look forward to doing. By embracing hobbies that keep you fit, you’ll have a much easier time making fitness a part of your lifestyle.
